When the Elephants Dance, A Novel

Creator: Tess Uriza Holthe | Fiction - 2002

In the final weeks of the brutal Japanese occupation of the Philippines during World War II, three different Filipino narrators--a thirteen-year-old boy, his older sister, and a guerrilla commander--recount the experiences of a people ...

Publisher: Crown Publishers

About this book
"Papa explains the war like this: 'When the elephants dance, the chickens must be careful.' The great beasts, as they circle one another, shaking the trees and trumpeting loudly, are the Amerikanos and the Japanese as they fight. And our Philippine Islands? We are the small chickens." Once in a great while comes a storyteller who can illuminate worlds large and small, magical and true to life. When the Elephants Dance introduces us to the incandescent voice of Tess Uriza Holthe, who sets her remarkable first novel in the waning days of World War II, as the Japanese and the Americans engage in a fierce battle for possession of the Philippine Islands. The Karangalan family and their neighbors huddle for survival in the cellar of a house a few miles from Manila. Outside the safety of their little refuge the war rages onfiery bombs torch the beautiful Filipino countryside, Japanese soldiers round up and interrogate innocent people, and from the hills guerillas wage a desperate campaign against the enemy. Inside the cellar, these men, women, and children put their hopes and dreams on hold as they wait out the war, only emerging to look for food, water, and medicine. Through the eyes of three narrators, thirteen-year-old Alejandro Karangalan, his spirited older sister Isabelle, and Domingo, a passionate guerilla commander, we see how ordinary people must learn to live in the midst of extraordinary uncertainty, how they must find hope for survival where none seems to exist. They find this hope in the dramatic history of the Philippine Islands and the passion and bravery of its people. Crowded together in the cellar, the Karangalans and their friends and neighbors tell magical stories to one another based on Filipino myth and legend to fuel their courage, pass the time, and teach important lessons. The group is held spellbound by these stories, which feature a dazzling array of ghosts, witches, supernatural creatures, and courageous Filipinos who changed the course of history with their actions. These profoundly moving stories transport the listeners from the chaos of the war around them and give them new resolve to fight on. With When the Elephants Dance Holthe has not only written a gripping narrative of how Alejandro, Isabelle, Domingo and their community fight for survival, but a loving tribute to the magical realism that infuses Filipino culture. The stories shared by her characters are based on the same tales handed down to Holthe from her Filipino father and lola, her grandmother. This stunning debut novel is the first to celebrate in such richness and depth the spirit of the Filipino people and their fascinating story and marks the introduction of a talented new author who will join the ranks of writers such as Arundhati Roy, Manil Suri, and Amy Tan.

In one word, this phone is AMAZING! This is my first BB since I am a graphic designer & own my own business, I needed a good phone that gave me the options to use phone, email & internet. I'm not familiar with touch screens, either, I'm really new to the smartphone PERIOD. With this being said, it took me no time to adjust to the touchscreen, phone, apps, navigation, etc. I'm in love. I don't think I will ever use another phone again, only to upgrade to a newer BB in the future (no time soon!) 4G is outstanding! 5/5 JudesMommy (Alabama) - See all my reviews This review is from: BlackBerry Torch 4G 9810 Phone, White (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) In one word, this phone is AMAZING! Hands down THE BEST!

This is THE BEST Phone I have ever had. Second Blackberry with two Androids in between. Will NEVER switch from Blackberry again. If you have to do any real work on a phone, This Torch is the way to go, can't beat that REAL QWERTY Keyboard. Sure everyone says "But it doesn't have a billion apps", well most of those billion apps are useless, I use EVERY app that I've downloaded. If you are looking for a new phone, DO NOT PASS THIS UP. 5/5 KGB "KGB" - See all my reviews This review is from: BlackBerry Torch 4G 9810 Phone, White (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) This is THE BEST Phone I have ever had. HORRIBLE

The first month-month and a half that I had this phone, everything worked great. The only complaint I had was that the internet was a little slow. Then, everything went downhill quickly. In order of events: 1. My email completely quit working. I couldn't send or receive emails. I took it the store, they fixed it, but the next day, it stopped again. We went through this series of events six times until I finally gave up. So now I have a phone with no email, which was a primary reason for purchasing a Blackberry to begin with. 2. Constant freezing of the screen. About 85% of the time, the screen completely freezes when I try to use the phone from it's "locked" state. I can't click, navigate, or most times even get the screen to light up until after several minutes of hitting buttons and sliding it open and closed. 3. Internet navigation? Forget it. It went from slow, to slower, to completely done. I would rather have my old 3G back than a 4G that doesn't access the internet at all... 1/5 lacehops - See all my reviews This review is from: BlackBerry Torch 4G 9810 Phone, White (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) The first month-month and a half that I had this phone, everything worked great. What the Torch 9800 should've been.....

For most people, the Torch 9800 was the first decent touchscreen phone RIM brought to the market. None of that SurePress nonsense, and the screen was actually responsive enough to be of use when you didn't necessarily want to use the trackpad/keyboard.For all intents and purposes - the Torch 9810 looks NO different than the 9800. If you put them side-by-side, I'm not sure if anyone would be able to tell which is which. That's alright though, since RIM focused on what's really important, and that's the hardware of the phone.Updates:- The processor in the 9810 has been upgraded, same one that's in the Bold 9930 - Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2 GHz. There's no multi-core functionality or anything like that, but the processor upgrade definitely helps makes the Torch 2 a snappier phone.- "Liquid Graphics Technology" - the Torch 9810 is touted as having this feature too, along with most of the OS 7 phones. Basically RIM put in a separate graphics... 4/5 Quentin Gerlach "IT Guy" (Trenton, NJ USA) - See all my reviews, September 2, 2011

Touch + Keyboard = Fast, Versatile Smartphone

For those familiar with the BlackBerry Operating System (OS) for smartphones, I believe you will be very pleased with any of the new OS7 devices. They make doing the tasks you're used to doing on your phone easier and much, much faster. There is no more waiting for messages, menus, and in many cases, apps - to open. You touch it, it opens. This is a fast smartphone. The browser is quick and loads sites quickly, and half the time they are the full site you'd see on your computer monitor. My only complaint is that the text doesn't re-wrap to fit the screen at each zoom level, but that's really picky. The battery does very well. With light use I can go a day and a half between charging, and with heavy use it always makes it through an 18 hour (5am-11pm)workday with a bit of charge to spare. The Torch 9800 battery did not last as long. The screen is gorgeous; pictures, wallpaper, messages, etc. are all crystal clear to the finest details... 5/5 J. Bakker (Mt. Problematic Supplier

Ok. so the supplier was prompt and courteous but the issues avoidable. I paid for two day shipping as i was due to travel the phone arrived after i left and only after i contacted the seller. Upon arrival and opening the box i got a used phone with scratches on the face plate, the wrong charger, the back plate is replaced with a cheap cover from another supplier. Upon opening to insert the battery the inside is dirty and has a green dust on the phone and there is no memory card. So decided to return only to realize i will now lose 15% restocking fee plus shipping ($81 or 18% cost of phone). Worst yet the supplier writes me to remove the bad review on the shipping problems as its bad for business. If the business was good i will not have an issue. Anyway the Torch is a great phone this is the third i am buying, the first from this supplier. Will never buy from here again. 1/5 S. Rambocas - See all my reviews, August 4, 2011

    Intelligent design

Blackberries may no longer be the top 'smart phones' because they don't do everything well but for what I consider their 'core' features - email and phone, in that order - they are still up there at the top. And the Torch is the current top Blackberry at the time I'm writing this. As a 'business phone', it combines the best features of 'traditional' blackberries with the best a highly graphical, 'touch' interface can provide. For a 'phone and entertainment' device, there may be better alternatives. My review is not going to discuss the Torch long list of features and capabilities. They are all listed at RIM's and 100 other different sites. I will only talk about why I currently prefer the Torch vs. anything else as a 'business' phone even now when my employer would allow me to use other brands if I wanted to.THE TORCH ADVANTAGE- Physical keyboard - The most visible Torch feature is the sliding keyboard. This allows for a larger display when compared... 5/5 A. Dent "Aragorn" (Minas Anor, GD) - See all my reviews, August 13, 2011

All Fired Up Over The Torch

I have had the pleasure of using a Blackberry device since the first Blackberry was launched. As a long time Blackberry user, I have found that I simply cannot get away from their product, nor do I want to. For a short period I had an iPhone but I could not get used to the keyboard. Every time I needed to write a long email I wanted to hit it with a hammer.Blackberry is simply the best for a business person or someone who needs to be typing on it all day. The keyboard on the Torch took a day to get used to vs the Curve but that was it. Here are a couple things I like about the Torch:1. Actual keyboard for those long e-mails.2. On screen keyboard for those quick texts or silent typing3. Calendar - always simple, just start typing by the time of day and you're done.4. Better camera (Not iPhone 4 good, but good)There are many other additions to the Torch, but the simple fact is its a work horse phone plain and simple. If you want... Great Business Phone!

The Blackberry Torch is the best all-around business smartphone. It emails better than the iPhone 4 because of the traditional Blackberry qwerty keyboard and it files and sorts emails like Outlook. I can see all my email accounts on one screen and I can see my sent emails in the same screen. This was something the iPhone 4 required going to two separate screens to see. The HTC ARIA was even worse, had to go to each account and then switch from the inbox to sent folder. This was a pain since I have 4 email accounts.Battery life on the Torch should get you through a full day, unless you are watching movies. For an average day, I talk for an hour or two, email 20 - 30 times, listen to an hour of music and search the web for about 30 mins. The HTC ARIA only lasted until 6pm.Screen resolution is good but not as nice as the iPhone 4. The camera is pretty good and has custom settings. One major flaw is the oversensitive screen lock button - can be a... 4/5 Ryan26 - See all my reviews The Blackberry Torch is the best all-around business smartphone. Love it!

This phone works flawlessly. The touch screen is easy to use and not overly sensitive. The browser is great. There are many things BlackBerry does so much better than anyone else such as contact management and instant message management, in my opinion. Push email is awesome. I've had BlackBerries and HTC and BlackBerry wins hands down. I have friends with iPhones and while their phone is dead until they get to a place to recharge it all I have to do is pop the battery out and put a fresh one in and I'm still going. Being able to replace the battery on the fly is very important when I am out hiking or camping. One possible drawback to this particular phone is the OS6. It is excellent in and of itself but my carrier doesn't support it and I was unable to get service books for the browser to work. Check with your carrier to see if the phone is compatible and if the OS is compatible. If not, a quick stop at Crackberry.com gave me the fix for that and now it works perfectly. Pleasantly surprised!

After reading plenty of reviews & sorting through the negatives,& not wanting to spend $30-I settled on this non-reviewed case for my BB Torch. 1st of all it was @ my mailbox in 2 days,The online description & pictures R exactly what I got. The fit is exact w/ all ports accessible & the hard exterior is rubberized to enhance grip and static pick-up to a minnimum.Case is sturdy enough to fit over back of phone which has a rubber backing & keeps it from vibrating off a table if u have that setting activated & keeps it from roaming all over the inside of ur pockets from everyday movements. For the $$ and the delivery time,I would suggest this particular case to protect the investment of preserving your BB Torch! 5/5 Frank "serpico" (Indiana) - See all my reviews, October 29, 2010

At least with this one you get what you pay for.

I put off buying a case for the Torch because people aren't happy with any of them. The other Torch cases are more expensive and have issues, based on the reviews.Based solely on the super-low price, I bought this case a little over a month ago. It looks and feels kinda cheap and the front piece occasionally pops off when I pull it from my jeans pocket, but my expectations were low. The occasional minor aggravation is more than offset by the price tag. Can't say the same for the pricier Torch cases. In short, it pretty much does what you want it to and doesn't cost much, and that makes for a good buy. 4/5 Papa Redden - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Can't beat it for the price!

I am always wary of buying cases online for BlackBerry phones (have been burned in the past). I don't know why, but it seems hard to find good protective cases. But for the price, I was willing to give this a shot. Thus far, it seems that the case is solid. It makes for a bit of a tight fit in my BB holster, but I imagine any case would. I am happy with the product and would recommend it! 4/5 BBBeliever - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) What the Torch 9800 should've been.....

    Intelligent Design

Blackberries may no longer be the top 'smart phones' because they don't do everything well but for what I consider their 'core' features - email and phone, in that order - they are still up there at the top. And the Torch and the Bold are the current top Blackberries. As a 'business phone', the Torch combines the best features of previous generation Blackberries with one of the best highly graphical, 'touch' interface for its screen size. If anyone is looking for a 'phone and entertainment' device, there should be better alternatives but when it comes to email/phone productivity, the BBs are still tops.I do not plan to discuss the Torch long list of features and capabilities. They are all listed at RIM's and 100 other different sites. I will only talk about why I currently prefer the Torch vs. almost anything else (still not decided between a Torch and a Bold) as a 'business' phone even now when my employer would allow me to use other brands if I wanted to.THE... 5/5 A. Blazing Fast!

I've been using Blackberry bold series for a long time and decided to give a try to Torch 9810. When I took it out from its box, I was amazed by its speed and screen resolution. It comes preloaded with the new Blackberry OS 7. I like the new operating system a lot. People might think that the new torch isn't that great upgrade from the previous torch. However, you will be amazed by its performance once you start using it. The touch screen is very responsive and the icons look great. It is a bit heavy device and big in hand but I like it overall. The keyboard is basically the same as the old torch. It has 8gb built-in memory which is plenty enough for me. I would highly recommend this device to anyone who is still hesitating to buy this device. My personal rating for this phone is 9 out of 10. Hope it was helpful. 5/5 Spencer - See all my reviews This review is from: Blackberry Torch 2 9810 Unlocked Phone with 1.2GHz Processor, GPS, 5 MP Camera and HD Video - Unlocked Phone - No Warranty - Grey (Wireless Phone Accessory) I've been using Blackberry bold series for a long time and decided to give a try to Torch 9810.
