Zapped, Why Your Cell Phone Shouldn't Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,268 Ways to Outsmart the Hazards of Electronic Pollution

Creator: Ann Louise Gittleman | Science - 2010-10-05

A groundbreaking exposé of the hidden truths of electropollution draws on the latest research to provide a step-by-step guide to protect you and your loved ones from the invisible hazards of everyday electromagnetic exposure, including ...

About this book
How many electronic innovations have you dialed, watched, surfed, charged, listed to, booted up, commuted on, cooked with, and plugged in today? Consider your typical day: If you’re like most people, it probably starts in front of your coffee maker and toaster, ends as you set the alarm on your cell phone, and involves no end of computers and gadgets, televisions and microwaves in between. We’re being zapped: Today 84 percent of Americans own a cell phone, 89 million of us watch TV beamed in by satellite, and we can’t sip a cup of coffee at our local cafÉ without being exposed to Wi-Fi. The very electronic innovations that have changed our lives are also exposing us, in ways big and small, to an unprecedented number of electromagnetic fields. Invisible pollution surrounds us twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, interrupting our bodies’ natural flow of energy. And for some, that pollution has reached the point of toxicity, causing fatigue, irritability, weakness, and even illness. But we don’t have to simply surrender. Ann Louise Gittleman brings forth the latest research into electromagnetic fields to create this groundbreaking guide for every citizen of the wireless age. With the proactive, levelheaded approach that has made her one of our most respected health experts, she not only clarifies the risks but also offers specific, step-by-step information for how anyone can minimize them. From where you place your sofa to when you use your cell phone to what you eat for dinner, Zapped is packed with strategies for avoiding and mitigating the damaging effects of electropollution. As she examines modern life room by room, device by device, Gittleman reveals a master plan for detoxifying your surroundings and protecting yourself and your family. We don’t need to abandon our homes—or even give up our PDAs—to be healthier and happier. Based on the latest scientific data, case studies, and Gittleman’s years of clinical practice, Zapped is an empowering guide to living safely with the gadgets we can’t live without.

Toys to tools, connecting student cell phones to education

Creator: Liz Kolb | 2008-10

This book is a practical guide for educators who would like to turn what many consider an annoying digital toy into a powerful educational tool.

Publisher: Intl Society for Technology in educ

About this book
Many, if not most, educators view cell phones as the enemy. Author Liz Kolb sees them as powerful technology in the hands of students. Acknowledging the current reality at many schools ban student cell phone use in the classroom Kolb discusses a host of innovative and highly interesting uses for the technology that do not require using the phones in the classroom. She also addresses the issues that have caused the bans and provides guidelines for overcoming the problems.Ignoring, or worse, demonizing a technology that students willingly and actively use in every other aspect of their lives is not a winning educational strategy. Mini lessons and powerful resources throughout the book are easily adaptable and appropriate for almost any grade level and are designed to enhance learning both inside and outside of the classroom. This book is a practical guide for educators who would like to turn what many consider an annoying digital toy into a powerful educational tool. Also available:RSS for Educators: Blogs, Newsfeeds, Podcasts, and Wikis in the Classroom - ISBN 1564842398PowerPoint Magic - ISBN 1564842355About the AuthorLiz Kolb is currently an adjunct assistant professor at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan. Dead Man's Cell Phone

And a dead man - with a lot of loose ends. So begins Dead Man's Cell Phone, a wildly imaginative new comedy by playwright Sarah Ruhl, recipient of a MacArthur ''Genius'' Grant and Pulitzer Prize finalist for her play The Clean House.

About this book
An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet caf. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. A work about how we memorialize the dead - and how that remembering changes us - it is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world. Sarah Ruhl's plays have been produced at theaters around the country, including Lincoln Center Theater, the Goodman Theatre, Arena Stage, South Coast Repertory, Yale Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, among others, and internationally. She is the recipient of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize (for The Clean House, 2004), the Helen Merrill Emerging Playwrights Award, and the Whiting Writers' Award. The Clean House was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2005. She is a member of 13P and New Dramatists.

    Recalled

I bought this phone and loved it, until the touch screen stopped working. When I called AT&T they informed me that it was recalled in 2009. There is nothing they can do for you either, so don't even waste your money. It will work for a few months and then NOTHING. Now I am out the money. Amazon should take this item off it's site. 1/5 laurahi - See all my reviews This review is from: AT&T Quickfire GTX75 Cell Phone Orange (Wireless Phone Accessory) I bought this phone and loved it, until the touch screen stopped working. Loved this phone!

I bought this phone when it first came out. Which I guess was three years ago? For a touch screen this phone was very durable! I'm a horse rider so I useually go through phones like I do clothes. I've had horses "eat" my phone before. Anyways, I dopped my phone to many times to count on concrete,in mud among other things, the screen never cracked unlike the Iphone and other touch screens. People say it's a crappy phone, though I do not agree. I don't think its the phones I honestly think it's just At&t. I will definitly be buying this phone again! 5/5 onyx_cross - See all my reviews This review is from: AT&T Quickfire GTX75 Cell Phone Orange (Wireless Phone Accessory) I bought this phone when it first came out. Easy and Cheap

I have a Motorola V-190 GSM quadband unlocked cell phone that I use to travel around the US and abroad. It's very convenient when you arrive at a foriegn airport to pick up a sim card at a kiosk, insert it into your cell have a local number as long as you're there. In the US I have been using T-mobile as my local carrier. I've found T-mobile service better than that of AT&T. However, since T-mobile's coverage in rural areas is pretty dismal, I decided to switch to AT&T.I ordered the AT&T Sim Card SKU 71234 offered here, and it was delivered in three days (good job OEM Shop). I logged into the AT&T sim registration site and registered the sim card (free). You need to give them the sim card # (20 digits starting with 89...) and your cell phones IMEI # (located in you cell phone under the battery). After taking your name and address the site gives you a new phone number. On the same site AT&T gives you a chance to pick a service plan and to add some minutes to... 5/5 Bob H (Richmond, VA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works OK with my HP Voice Messenger

I am a foreign tourist visiting the US. I asked AT&T (chat support) if my unlocked HP 510 Voice Messenger would work with a SIM card purchased at Amazon's. They said that I could use my phone but "... you have to purchase a SIM card from an AT&T dealer..." However, I decided to purchase this very inexpensive SIM card, which arrived within 7 days (standard shipping). Went to GoPhone's page to activate it; they asked for my device's IMEI number (typed *#06# in the phone) and my new SIM card's serial number. Then typed some personal info required by AT&T, and finally purchased a $15 refill. Voila! Worked great! 5/5 MBornscheuer "mbq" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Works great!

The local AT&T store wanted $25 for a SIM card, plus they told me that the only plan available with their $25 SIM card would cost 25 cents per minute. No thanks! I found this one on Amazon, ordered it and received it within 2 days. It worked just fine, and upon activation was able to get the 10 cent per minute and $1 per day when used plan. Well worth the $5 I paid for the card even if some people say that you can get a SIM card for free from AT&T - I never figured out how to get a free one and it was worth $5 not to have to worry about figuring it out. Would definitely buy this again. 5/5 Jeff Cheap (Beijing, P.R. China) - See all my reviews, July 20, 2010

    Great little phone

I bought this phone for my 15 yr old daughter and it arrived today. I messed around with it for about 2 hours, going through all the settings and features. It seems durable and is a cute little phone, especially for a teen girl.. it is accented with lavender/pink afterall.Call quality is great so far and all features work as expected. When closed, it is a somewhat smaller phone than I am used to. It is a little shorter, but a tad wider. I didn't find this to be a downfall though - just pointing it out. (My current phone is a Nokia E71x). At first I thought it would be awkward when talking since it is smaller, but it isn't at all.The screen is a nice size and is vibrant and clear. It seems like the screen is made of glass, although I didn't look it up to see for sure. The screen on the Pantech is bigger than the screen on my Nokia. The touchscreen is very responsive and quick. I did find though that it doesn't acknowledge the... 5/5 MyPenName (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews, July 27, 2011

    Nice little phone!

I have had the Pursuit II for alittle over 24 hours now. I have to say that I am quite pleased with the phone. When I unpacked it I did notice however, that there is no user manual enclosed. Only the quick start guide and me being the electronic nerd that I am, I like to read the manual to make sure I'm not missing any cool little programs or quirks the phone might have. However, the Pantech website now has a downloadable user manual there and I printed it off to have :)When I finally got it charged and activated, I was pleasantly surprised at the actual size of the screen! It is quite large for such a small phone. The color quality of it is also very vibrant.I really like how responsive the touchscreen is. However, I thought I could use a stylus, but it won't read the touch of the stylus. But that's ok, just thought I would mention it.I've made a couple calls with it so far and the sound quality is good. No static or dropped calls either... 5/5 Heather H - See all my reviews This review is from: Pantech Pursuit II Phone, Pink (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) I have had the Pursuit II for alittle over 24 hours now. Great phone

I really love this phone. I have had it for a few weeks and I couldn't be happier. I don't need a data plan and AT&T requires them with most phones. This limited my options greatly. I had a Samsung Strive before this and it was alright, but I use the calender all the time and it was terribly annoying. This phone is small, cute, and the calender is wonderful. It comes with a few nice little apps. I wasn't sure about the touchscreen but it has worked well too. There have been a few times that the touchscreen response has hesitated a little, but it picks right back up. There are a lot of ways to organize things and access them. Haven't had any issues with it. Just sad I scratched it already. 5/5 Curtisbk (Richmond, Va USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Pantech Pursuit II Phone, Pink (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) I really love this phone. Great low cost smart phone

I purchased 2 of these phones for my college aged children. At college and home the students have full WiFi coverage so they don't need a data plan ($0). Using Google voice and WiFi they have full smartphone functionality with no monthly bill, and the kids love the phone. Almost all Android software will run except some of the really high power games that require a dual processor. Purchase a $100 go phone card and you basically get a smart phone for about $20 a month. (including the purchase price and the 1 year service plan) The battery seems to last for days even though the kids are using the phone ALL THE TIME. Only time will tell if the phone will hold up, but at this price the phone only has to last 3 months before we break even versus a traditional plan. I might buy a 3rd for me. 5/5 Rich (Rochester NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) A long trip

I bought this phone as a personal phone. I have a work cellphone through AT&T, but it's very basic. I wouldn't say I use my personal phone for much more than texts and the occasional call. I originally went with Straight Talk since I didn't want to pay a lot for monthly service. While with them for a year, I had 4 different phones. Only one was a touchscreen and it had made me wonder if touchscreen phones are just not made for me. This past December, I decided it was time to get a new phone. I tried one of Straight Talk's Androids, but even though Sprint is listed as having excellent coverage at my home address, I could not get any reception inside and only 1 bar outside. A Sprint rep told me to try their prepaid services instead of Straight Talk's. I tried an HTC on Virgin Mobile and had no reception. I returned it and tried a Motorola on Boost Mobile, no reception. I should add that the area I live in has very good - excellent coverage on all the major networks, including full... 5/5 Evan "Evan" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good Messaging phone

I got this phone in green color last week for my wife. I got it for no charge.Pros:=====1. Capacitive touch screen. Earlier version has resistive which not good enough.2. Voice quality is good.3. Recording a conversation is very simple.4. Easy to do text messaging. Vertical keyboard out is easy use while adding phone entries.Cons:=====1. There is a way to customize home screen, it's not well designed.2. Photo tagging of caller only available for contacts in phone not in SIM.3. Touch screen could have been better. 4/5 V. I have really enjoyed this phone. The messaging system is great, and the touch screen is up to par (something I had trouble with on my previous phone)My only issue is that there isn't a lot of space for old messages. Fast. Complicated. Eats megabytes for breakfast.

I've checked out what other reviewers have had to say about this phone, and find myself in agreement with most of them. The phone is amazing. Here's what else you need to know:a) data planb) appsc) user manualData Plan: you will need a separate data plan for the phone. My wife has an iPhone 3G, with an unlimited data plan from AT&T. But that phone doesn't use the 4G LTE network. AT&T is slowing building out its 4G LTE network, and it may not be available in your area. You have to buy a plan whether or not you currently have 4G LTE coverage. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that 4G LTE was available in my area, even though the official AT&T coverage map didn't include it.I bought a 200 megabyte per month plan. It seemed like a lot of bytes. Then I started using my phone. Trulia has a great app that lets you find the houses for sale in whatever neighborhood you find yourself in. You can see the entire listing, just... 4/5 Robert Felice (Silicon Valley Boy) - See all my reviews, January 9, 2012

    Great Phone

This is a great phone, I have owned it for 3 days now and i really like it. The build quality is great, even though it is plastic. The phone itself looks beautiful and feels great, the weight is also good it doesn't feel to light or to heavy. The screen is one of the best ive seen on any phone. Everything cant be perfect though.I am not in a lte market so i cant comment on that aspect. As far as the phone goes you do have to keep a couple of things in mind. The phone has a 4.5 inch screen, although this sounds great it has some obvious draw backs. With the screen being so big one of the draw backs is size. It is not a comfortable phone to carry around and putting it in you're pocket as well as pulling it out can be awkward. I wear slim jeans and this has become an annoyance. When you talk on it you notice the size, it feels like holding a scientific calculator to you're ear.The second draw back is once again the screen size. This being 4.5 inches it takes up... 4/5 Eliseo Roman (Hawthorne, Ca) - See all my reviews, November 11, 2011

    Review for Samsung Skyrocket

I will start with the bad things first:Price: I initially bought it from Amazon wireless and they said it won't be delivered until December, so I canceled my order and went with ATT premier store and paid full price on the phone. It is like 70 dollars more.Battery: I took it off the charger at 9am today, right now it is almost 2pm and I am at 63%, I did used Google Navigation (while charging in the car). And mostly light browsing, power saving mode seems to help a lot, with 60 percent it can last me till the end of the day with almost 5% left. (Tested that yesterday) So battery life is not great but given it is an LTE phone with 4.5 inch screen, I would say this is 50/50.Accessories: Lack of accessories for now, you might want to get a good case for this considering it is a very delicate and expensive phone, you don't want to test the durability yourself. And no HD screen. & ATT customer service, ATT wouldn't give me the unlock code even... 4/5 Tech Gadget geek "gadget testing geek" (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G Android Phone, Black (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) I will start with the bad things first:Price: I initially bought it from Amazon wireless and they said it won't be delivered until December, so I canceled my order and went with ATT premier store and paid full price on the phone. Pantech Breeze III

Pros--Excellent call quality and volume.-The microphone is good.-The phone is customizable, but it is easy to keep the advanced stuff out of the way when you don't need it.-You can get information without even opening the phone via the little screen on the front, and the notification LEDs.-The notification system is nice. (this is from a webOS and Android user)-Battery life is good.Neutral--There's a lot of AT&T logos on this thing. One above the outside screen, one below the inside screen, one on the 'OK' button, and when the phone is open, the outside screen has the AT&T logo on it.-There is some AT&T bloatware on this, but it generally keeps out of your way.-Shortcut buttons under the inside screen. These will be useful to some, but it can give the feeling that there are too many buttons on the thing.-A control phone with voice button. Useful to some, but a dedicated button is overkill... 5/5 Brett Patrick (North Brunswick, NJ United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Pantech Breeze III Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) Pros--Excellent call quality and volume.-The microphone is good.-The phone is customizable, but it is easy to keep the advanced stuff out of the way when you don't need it.-You can get information without even opening the phone via the little screen on the front, and the notification LEDs.-The notification system is nice. Very Good Basic Phone for Older Folks

This has been a great phone for me & my wife. We don't need a fancy phone. We just use a phone for "what it is intended to do". To make Phone Calls! Anyone remember making phone calls?? Ha..It has enough features to keep us satisfied like the calendar for keeping track of appointments, the pill reminder alarms, the tip calculator, regular calculator and voice commands..It has a lot of stuff we don't need like, internet, email, messaging, ect..Signal strength is great all the time, but we have a great cell tower structure here. The battery lasts a good long time and the voices sound just fine, clear and sharp. I think too many people want to get a FREE phone and then expect it to wipe their butts for them. It is a really good basic phone and with the ability to have large keys and large fonts, it's a good phone for old folks. 5/5 Texas Yankee "jusval" (USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Pantech Breeze III Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) This has been a great phone for me & my wife. Easy to use.

The Breeze mode is great. I have all the features that I use handy and do not have a lot of features that I do not use in the way. I have had Nokia's for many years. This phone feels a bit sturdier, definitely heavier. The menu navigation is easier. 5/5 Mary (Marine City, MI, United States) - See all my reviews, August 9, 2011

Very Pretty, Sleek Detailing, Great Fitting Case!

First, I've gotta say (only because it drives me CRAZY) that this case is the (AT&T, idk about Verizon) iPhone4, and I assume they mean iPhone 4 "S", there is no iPhone "4g". Okay, that being said, I have an AT&T iPhone4, and this case fits very well. It's very very pretty, true to screen appearance. Much like other cases, it attaches to the back of phone and just wraps around the sides, it doesn't cover the front- nor does it claim to. All too often reviews trash cases that don't "protect" the front of the phone, but this is something that is easy to tell just by looking at the picture or reading the description of the case before buying. Personally, I prefer cases that leave the front of the phone unobstructed as to not hinder its use. As far as protection against dropping goes, I haven't dropped it yet... and I don't plan to drop it on purpose, just to test the case's durability, sorry, I love my phone too much ;-)I can say, though, that I like the rubberized texture of... 5/5 LoveMyWESTIEinWI - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) I love the looks of this cover and it fits great. The only problem it had (which was a big one), the cover bled on my skin. After using my phone, my skin was the bright pink color. It wouldn't come off with soap and water. If it didn't bleed the color, I would love it. 2/5 cupcakediva - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) 4 1/2 stars

My first smartphone was the Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate), then the Samsung Infuse, which was a faster, bigger Captivate, and now the SII Skyrocket, so you could say I've seen the evolution of Samsung's Android phones and software.Let me start by saying this is an awesome phone. Amazing, even. When I compare it to my 1 year old Samsung Infuse, it blows it out of the water in every respect (except the screen, which I'll get to later).UI - The UI on this phone is fantastic. I personally find Touchwiz to be a nice add on to Android. The notification bar switches are VERY useful, especially Wifi, rotation, and GPS. This phone has many added animations, which make everything look much smoother than stock Android. The new widgets like the Calendar and Photo Frame are very nice and add a lot to my home screens. The Phone/Messaging apps are some of the best I've seen. The camera is simpler than before, so easier to use. Overall the UI is a great improvement... 5/5 Ro - See all my reviews This review is from: Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket 4G Android Phone, White (AT&T) (Wireless Phone) My first smartphone was the Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate), then the Samsung Infuse, which was a faster, bigger Captivate, and now the SII Skyrocket, so you could say I've seen the evolution of Samsung's Android phones and software.Let me start by saying this is an awesome phone.
